All supported versions of Microsoft Office can save Office files as PDF. CopiaFacts now defaults to use the 'via PDF' conversion method for Office documents, where the Microsoft application is automated to save as PDF and then the intermediate file is converted to faxable TIF using the built-in converter. There are many options to control this conversion, documented in the Image Rendering Options topic.
If you prefer to use the Document Converter print driver the $convert_options keyword PRINT (P) will select this option.
The document conversions using Microsoft Office conversions have currently been validated with Office 97, Office 2000, Office 2003, Office 2007, Office 2010, Office 2013, and Office 2016, 2019 and 2021 versions of these programs. The document converter also supports retail versions of Office 365 and Windows desktop versions of Microsoft 365. Document Converter uses the latest version installed, but Microsoft do not officially support operation with more than one version of Office installed, and you may encounter problems if you do this. Microsoft also do not support the automation of Office from a service application, but CVSINGLE implements steps to avoid these restrictions when the Document Converter is run in service mode. Automating Office from Document Converter running as a service is not supported for Office 365 or Microsoft 365. Web-only installations of Microsoft 365 are not supported for any Document Converter operations. LibreOffice can provide an alternative for environments where CopiaFacts does not support Microsoft Office.

It is strongly recommended that you do a 'full' install of the Office application(s) you are using so that no features are set for installation 'on demand' when required for a specific document. Users have also reported problems and delays when a virus checker is set to examine each document as it is loaded by Office.
Files to be converted by Word must contain a signature in the first four bytes of either "{\rt" (for Rich Text Format files), or hexadecimal "D0 CF 11 E0" (for Word .DOC files) or be valid .DOCX files. To override this check to convert other formats supported by Word, add an FS variable CVT_NOSIGCHECK to the FS file controlling the conversion.
![]() | Warning: overriding the document signature check may result in the conversion creating a large number of garbage pages if Word cannot handle the format. You may also encounter the problems described in the Microsoft technical note at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973904. |
Printing from PowerPoint can result in Powerpoint automatically modifying colors to 'improve readability' when printed to a monochrome fax device. Use the PPT_COLORTYPE variable set to a value of 1 to override this PowerPoint action.
