Mail Relay via ISP or Corporate Mail Server

Scroll Prev Top Next More

In addition to the default e-mail outbound e-mail operations, CopiaFacts also supports logging into another mail server to relay the e-mail to a final destination.  These operations are configured using EMSETUP. The principal uses of this feature are as follows:

•When corporate policy requires that all e-mail leaving the site must be sent using the corporate mail server. In this case you can specify that mail intended for all destinations is sent in this way by leaving blank the 'Use for e-mail domains' box in EMSETUP.

•To send intra-company e-mail to local recipients. In this case EMSETUP is set up with a specific mail domain name or names in the 'Use for e-mail domains' box.

•For smaller sites, when an ISP blocks access to port 25 and all mail must pass through the ISP's mail server. You may find that an ISP with such a policy also limits your e-mail volumes.

•To send system-generated notifications. This has the advantage that it may be possible to send notifications of downtime even when the COPIAFACTS engine is not available, provided that there is still an Internet connection for EMDIRECT to use.

In EMSETUP you can specify that the independent mail server is to be used only for notifications, only for COPIAFACTS e-mail, or for both. When configured for specific domains in COPIAFACTS e-mail, you can also select this method for specific transmissions as follows:

•The $email_options keyword forceISP will cause e-mail for a specific item to be sent using the configured mail server.

•The use of an I prefix on an $email_retry_delays command will cause the next scheduled retry to be sent using the configured mail server.

EMSETUP allows the configuration of secure login to the e-mail account at the mail server. TLS security can be configured as Explicit if the server advertises STARTTLS capability, or Implicit (usually on port 465) if the server supports this. This ensures the security of transmission only as far as the server: what happens beyond this depends on how the mail server handles the e-mail.

In addition to the use of basic authentication (login and password) EMSETUP can also use a Connector which you can set up to send email to your corporate server.

Provided that COPIAFACTS e-mail is accepted by the mail server, it is treated and recorded as successful.  For local intra-company destinations this would normally indicated that the e-mail has reached the destination in-box, but this is not the case for external destinations.  By contrast normal COPIAFACTS e-mail (not sent via an ISP or corporate server) is always sent to the local mail server of the destination domain.
