E-Mail transmissions are logged in the normal way, although several of the log fields are irrelevant and are therefore left empty. The mail server (MX record) used for the mail transmission is logged in the ANS (answerback) field, and the effective target e-mail address in the FAXNUM field.

'Call time' for an e-mail transmission is the total time from identifying the FS file as an e-mail. 'Connect time' is the time from the point when the MX record for the target address was obtained. These times are shown with a decimal position of seconds in the $attempt_record line written to the FS file.

The full text of an error message returned from a remote server is added as a $var_def EMAIL_ERROR in the FS file written to FAIL.
